Replacing Drip Edge on Existing Roof Without a Re-Roof
Replacing drip edge on existing roof edges is work I do at Hearth Roofing with your shingles left on. My crew replaces or retrofits the metal along the eaves and rakes, so no full re-roof is needed.
I work all over Queens. Fascia repair and the gutter reset happen in the same visit.
Signs your roof edge metal is done
You can spot every one of these from the sidewalk.
-
Rusted or bent drip edge
Wavy where it should run straight.
-
Missing drip edge
Bare wood at the edge where the metal should be.
-
Water behind the gutters
It spills down behind them when it rains hard.
-
Stained siding
Streaks and stains just below the eaves.
-
Rotted fascia
Soft or split wood at the eaves.
-
Sagging edge shingles
The first course droops over the gutter.
How I swap the edge with the shingles still on
We open a short stretch at a time, never the whole roof line.
-
Inspect the edge
I check the fascia, starter strip and underlayment before quoting.
-
Lift the first course
The starter strip comes up too, then the old edge comes off.
-
Fix the fascia
Rotted board is repaired or replaced while it's exposed.
-
Set the new edge
Under the underlayment and ice and water shield at the eaves, over it at the rakes, with the gutter apron lapped in.
-
Reseal and reset
Shingles go back down at the right overhang and the gutters get rehung, or replaced if they're too rusted to reset.
The rest of the roof is never touched
Aluminum or galvanized steel, matched to your roof
Drip edge is part of the edge flashing I specialize in. I color-match it to your shingles and gutters so the new metal blends in.

Edge-only job: what to expect
They stay. Only the first course and starter strip lift, then get resealed. Re-roofing anyway? That's drip edge on a new roof or a first install.
I replace the bad section in the same visit. If rot runs the length of the board, it becomes a full fascia repair.
Yes, they come down. They go back pitched slightly toward the downspouts, because dead level gutters hold water.
Yes, all of them. On attached rowhouses I keep the work to your own stretch of edge.

I look over the eaves, rakes, fascia and gutters, then quote the edge-only fix. You get the price for replacing drip edge on existing roof edges before a single shingle is lifted.
