Roof to Wall Flashing on Queens Houses and Brick Buildings
Roof to wall flashing is what Hearth Roofing installs, repairs and re-flashes where your roof meets a sidewall, a headwall or a brick wall, across Queens.
Which flashing your wall joint takes
Each joint takes its own set of pieces.
| Joint | Where you find it | Pieces it takes | Where it usually fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sidewall along siding | Dormers, house additions | Step flashing, woven in course by course, with counter flashing or siding over it | No kickout at the bottom |
| Headwall | Porch and garage roofs | Apron plus counter flashing | Siding cut short over the apron |
| Brick wall | Attached rowhouses, two-families | Step or base flashing, counter flashing in a mortar reglet | Counter flashing caulked to the brick face |
| Flat roof at a wall or parapet | Multi-family, mixed-use buildings | Base flashing, termination bar, counter flashing | Loose bar, or a parapet wall leaking above the flashing |
How my crew flashes the joint, bottom layer up
Flashing a roof at a wall means lapping each layer over the one below, so water only runs out and down.
-
Open it up
Old metal off, rotted sheathing replaced.
-
Membrane first
Ice and water shield runs up the wall.
-
Base pieces with the roofing
Step, apron or base pieces go in with the shingles, plus a kickout to steer water off the sidewall.
-
Counter flashing last
Set into a mortar reglet or under a termination bar. Sealant goes on last, never alone.
Leak at the wall: reseal, repair or re-flash
Water at the wall line doesn't automatically mean the roof to wall flashing has to come off.
-
Resealing
The metal is tight and sound. Only the sealant has cracked.
-
Flashing repair
One section is loose or rusted, or the counter flashing pulled out of the mortar.
I can fix the failed section without redoing the whole joint.
-
Full re-flashing
Rotted sheathing, repeat leaks, or flashing that was only ever caulked to the wall.
Which one fits comes out of a flashing inspection. I lift a piece and check the deck before I quote anything.
What people ask me about wall flashing
Step flashing on a sidewall, apron flashing on a headwall, base flashing on a flat roof, each with counter flashing over it.
No. Sealant cracks within a few seasons, so it only works as the final bead over properly lapped metal.
Usually a little. I lift the lower siding courses and reinstall them, and on brick I cut a new reglet into the mortar joint.
